say that the move -- women have already proved themselves in the line of fire. steve centanni is live in washington with more on this. hi, steve. >> that debate continues in women over combat. even though the policy has now changed to acknowledge the reality in today's military. women have been serving in certain combat roles for years. but with the stroke of the pen just last week. outgoing defense secretary leon panetta made it official. women can serve alongside men on the front lines. some opponents say this could lead to problems with unit cohesion and combat readiness. >> my issue here is mixing the genders in infantry units, armor units and special forces units is not a positive. there are many distracters there which puts a burden on the small unit combat leaders, and actually creates an environment because of their living conditions that is not conducive to readiness. others claim women suffer more than men and that pregnancy is an issue. to senator john mccain it's really a question of equal standards for certain demanding jobs. >> i think women obviously are prepared to ser

are mourning their friends. steve harrigan monitoring the developments tonight from our newsroom in south florida. steve, word of some people in custody tonight. >> that's right. shepard. this nightclub where the tragedy took place has now become a crime scene. police have gee tand so far at least four people, two band members and two club owners for five days of questioning. they want to know why there was no fire escape, why there was no sprinkler system. why there was only one exit to get out of a nightclub packed with more than 1200 people. there was a fire extinguisher but when a band member tried to use that. it failed. shepard. >> record floods have destroyed thousands of home in eastern australia. given rise to countless heros. today we saw video of another remarkable rescue effort from the perspective of a helicopter crew. can you see how the floods overtook that pickup truck trapping two women and a small child in the back. the adults put the toddler in a bag. and lifted the screaming child to safety. everybody there survived but the disaster so far has killed at least 4 people.

island back in 2003. steve harrigan joining us live from our miami bureau with the latest on this. steve. >> reporter: jaime police have made three arrests as their investigation continues in anger over what went wrong continues to build in brazil in this deadly nightclub fire. first we are learning that the club was initially supposed to hold no more than one thousand people, more than double that inside the club. the pyrotechnic's display firing flares into the air that set the foam roof on fire technically banned under brazil law. there was just one exit operating. initially bouncers stopped people from fleeing out of that exit, because they were scared they were trying not to may their bar tab. it was really smoke that killed most of the more than 230 people dead in this. a thick toxic smoke that not only killed but also disoriented. 50 bodies were found inside the bathroom, people mississippi taking that bathroom door for an exit door. this area has been overwhelmed, the tiny morgue overwhelmed with dead bodies, the bodies moved to a gymnasium, that's where parents came to identify

reviews the oscar-nominated film amour. steve hartman visits a young chicken farmer with pluck and more. first the headlines for this sunday morning the 27th of january, 2013. from southern brazil comes news of a huge nightclub fire. firefighters in the town of santa maria say at least 245 people were killed inside the club. hundreds more were hurt. it is not yet clear what started the fire. it's been a weekend of bloodshed in chicago. six people were shot dead in the city yesterday. two of the killings happened just blocks from an antigun rally. among the victims was a 16-year-old boy. another gun-control rally took place in washington yesterday with thousands marching calling for stricter weapons laws. the senate is preparing to begin debating the issue this week. hackers have taken aim at the department of justice. yesterday a group known as anonymous took over the u.s. sentencing commission's website. they say it was a response to the suicide earlier this month of aaron swartz. he is a computer prodigy who was facing up to 45 years in prison for allegedly illegally downloading milli

, but no response the other way from the leaders in iran. other questions? yes, sir, in the back. >> senator steve cheney with american security project. these do you talk about weapons of mass destruction come of it that your thoughts on weapons of mass destruction. under new state the caps at 1550 but thousands were in reserve, is there not an opportunity here to look at the triad, significant reductions, perhaps look again at the start and not building new bomber. >> that will be part of the debate. we have to decide at what level do we need to be from the national security military standpoint to protect the american people and to be seen as the capability to do that. i think the larger question is that we need to focus on rather than reduction is what's happening around the world. what's happening in the korea and what's happening in iran and what kind of access are some of these groups going to have two wmd capabilities? that's the greater threat. i do give senator lugar and senator nunn great credit for being part of reducing -- destroying some of those older weapons and so forth and so on.
